Appeals Court rejects conviction in skier's 2009 beatingVANCOUVER, Washington - The Court of Appeal of the State set aside the conviction, attempted murder of Michael D. Collins, who was accused of brutally beating and stealing a cross-country skier in Skamania County in a highly publicized case in 2009. The higher court upheld the conviction of the man of Vancouver grand larceny. The court's decision reduces the penalty Collins, nearly 25 years, probably six years in prison. Collins will return to the Superior Court of Skamania County late to be resentenced.In 2010, he was sentenced to a term of 75 months for the robbery charge, but lawyers could possibly argue for more or less when he is resentenced. The best cross country skiiers in our nation are competing in 4 separate xc ski races over the course of a week. The first cross country ski race held on Sunday January 2, 2010 was a nordic sprint race, using the classic ski technique. Snow was in short supply and the Black Mountain Ski Area and Chisholms Ski Club worked diligently to get the nordic course ready. They were able to pull off the nordic sprint race since the course was 1.4km and volunteer help and snow making was readily available. Tuesday’s 10/15k classic races, have been moved back to Wednesday due to the shortage of the white stuff. ...
